Thanos from Avengers Embracing Slow Living

August 25, 2019

Thanos would have been someone that reads my simple and slow living blog while embracing a slow living lifestyle. Yes, I’m certainly talking about the Thanos from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) franchise, the main protagonist in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

[Spoiler alert: If you by any chance have not watched Avengers: Infinity War or Avengers: Endgame, my advice is to read this article only after you have watched it as then this article will make more sense to you.]

Embracing Slow Living Lifestyle

In the initial scenes in Avengers: Endgame, we see Thanos all alone on a planet all to himself, his galactic retirement home. The camera focused on him picking some peculiar fruits and placing them into a basket, then he was inside boiling water and prepping food. This was right before the surviving members of Avengers burst into his home questioning him about the infinity stones.

Thanos was absolutely digging the simple and slow living lifestyle. I salute him for that and also the writers for showing us that part of life this philosophical villain retreated into. Some will perhaps call it the typical retirement. I like to call it a slow living retirement.

I bet that if he chose to have internet and a laptop on his planet, he would totally be reading this post right now (wink) or at least, I hope.

He is unlike any villain we have seen; others tend to be greedy for power and would stop at nothing to stay on top to be the only villain. In this MCU film version, Thanos was able to simply leave everything behind and isolate himself, happy with what he has accomplished. Little did he know that that was about to change.

Embracing the slow living lifestyle

In real life, there are many of us who, like Thanos, are opting for a simple and slow living lifestyle, perhaps now or perhaps after your retirement. It does not mean that we have to isolate ourselves like Thanos though! If you’ve read my blogpost about slow living, you know that I strongly believe that slow living is entirely personal to you, yes YOU. Nobody dictates what slow living should and should not be other than you. Everyone is different and that is why everyone is special in their own way. How we choose to live a slow and simple lifestyle is entirely within our capacity. There are just so many factors involved and there are no rules to follow except the ones you set for yourself. Besides, no one has the right to judge how you live your life. Correct?

Embracing Slow Living Lifestyle

In a world where we are consumed by busyness, we often look at how others are doing it and try to imitate, that’s just human nature. Don’t get me wrong, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, if you are new to slow and simple living, it is no surprise that you want to get some guidance on how to get started. My advice is to follow the advice of accounts or blogs that really resonate with you, someone that is like-minded. Then, use the advice as an inspiration and personalise it to build that slow and simple life you want.

Simpler Times

Many of us think things were much simpler in the olden days but if I could ask my grandparents they would say yes and no. Yes, they had less things to deal with like bureaucracy, exams etc. but no in the sense that medical technology was not as advanced as now, or communication methods like phones, internet and postal were also not as advanced. If you want to get a feel of the olden days and slow living, I suggest watching movies or TV series that can help you or remind you how life was.

One that I particularly like now is the frontier TV series When Calls the Heart based on the book with the same name by Janette Oke. I saw a short interview with Janette Oke on Instagram @wcth_tv where she talks about the magic of this series and why it resonates with the fans. She said that it is easy to go back in history and relive those times and to identify with them partly because the human heart doesn’t change but it gets us out of the pressure pack world of now. At least slipping back to it feels easier, but we forget that those times weren’t actually easy, it is simply that when we slip back to history, it makes us feel relaxed away from the busyness of our world now.

Thanos had the infinity stones, yet he chose to destroy them and leave everything behind. It only proves to me that simple and slow living lifestyle is an important concept that we all should embrace. After he snapped half of the life in the universe to dust, he was seemingly at peace with a smile on his face, that he could now rest.

However, if we looked back at Thanos’ path to achieve his goal, then unlike the comics, Thanos is not lovestruck, his plan is based on his strategy to “save” the universe. He believes that the universe has become too overpopulated to continue surviving on the limited resources of the cosmos. His solution for this ecological imbalance is to remove half of the population of the universe for life to continue as it had before. To achieve this one goal, he went through great ordeals to get the infinity stones. He did most of the work himself, he was there to fight and collect the infinity stones himself including an ultimate sacrifice on his part for the soul stone. It is no wonder that he just wanted to retreat and live a peaceful life until the end of his days. Also, because he believed that balance in the universe had been achieved.

Finding balance

Finding balance in our everyday lives is key to lead a slow and simple lifestyle. We want to slow down and enjoy the little moments, we also want to fill our days with fun activities with our family, feel grateful and feel the love. I am still learning to slow down, at the same time learning to embrace the balance every day. You may ask, how am I staying inspired after starting this slow and simple lifestyle?

I love movies and TV shows, they bring me joy and it is no surprise that you would find me hooked to the TV every now and then. Just like books, there’s always something valuable you can learn from TV and movies. Here are my top picks that inspired and continuing to inspire me in the simple and slow living lifestyle.

  1. When Calls the Heart TV Series
It’s set in the 19th century, we get to see historical settings and get a feel for the time period in this frontier series. The story celebrates the power of the human spirit, the character’s growth and strength in overcoming adversities. The power of love and my favourite is how the community get together during their best and most difficult times.
  2. Tidying up with Marie Kondo TV Series
In this TV series on Netflix, Marie visits houses in the U.S. to help people declutter their house. The show made me reflect on the things I have and that lead me to want to redesign my life. Marie really inspired me to live with fewer things, so I started my simple living thanks to her. You can read more about my decluttering journey here.
  3. Avengers: Endgame Movie
I’ve always love superheroes shows, so just watch it because it is awesome. Be a part of a big game. You’ll learn a thing or two from our superheroes plus you’ll be inspired by the Thanos opening scene. Be warned, it may inspire you to move to the countryside! 😉

Do you think Thanos would enjoy reading my blog if it existed in the MCU? I hope you enjoyed this post and cheers to continuing our journey of simple and slow living.

I love the quote: “the human heart doesn’t change but it gets us out of the pressure pack world of now”

That is exaxtly how I feel when I escape into stories, or other worlds. I think so many people found Thanos really interesting for precisely this reason, we all knew what he did was “wrong” but there is an ache to simplicity and an ache to finding balance that we all feel.

I’ve never been a fan of period dramas until I watched the movie The Favourite, and now I find them so fascinating to get a glimpse into how people used to live. I;d recommend The Empresses of the Palace on netflix about Chinese concubines during the Qing Dynasty.

I love the quote too! I really do feel that when watching movies or TV, it helps me get out of the pressure in my world now. Maybe it is the entertainment affect that movies & TV provides. I have not watch The Favourite but heard it has good reviews. Thank you for your recommendation, I’ll definitely check it out. 🙂
